Key Considerations for Accessible/Universal Bathroom Design

Designing an accessible or universal bathroom in New Zealand requires thoughtful planning to ensure the space is functional, safe, and comfortable for everyone, regardless of age or ability. This aligns with the principles of universal design, which aims to create environments that are accessible to all people without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

Space and Layout:

  • Ample Space: The bathroom should have sufficient space to accommodate mobility aids, such as wheelchairs or walkers. This includes clear turning spaces and unobstructed pathways.

  • Door Width: Doors should be at least 810mm wide to allow easy access for wheelchairs. Sliding doors can be a practical solution to save space.

  • Thresholds: Ensure a level entry into the bathroom, avoiding steps or high thresholds that could impede access.

Fixtures and Fittings:

  • Toilets: Install a toilet at a height of around 460mm to 480mm from the floor, making it easier for individuals with limited mobility to sit down and stand up. ADL Brand Member: Waterware can provide these.

  • Sinks: Wall-mounted sinks with space underneath allow for wheelchair access. Adjustable-height sinks offer flexibility for different users.

  • Showers: Curbless, walk-in showers with a wide entry are ideal. Incorporate a fold-down seat and adjustable-height showerhead on a support rail for added convenience.

  • Grab Bars: Strategically place grab bars around the toilet, shower, and sink areas to assist with balance and support. Ensure they are sturdy and well-installed.

Materials and Finishes:

  • Non-Slip Surfaces: Use non-slip tiles or flooring materials to reduce the risk of falls, especially in wet areas.

  • Contrasting Colors: Utilize contrasting colors between walls, floors, and fixtures to aid visually impaired users in distinguishing different elements within the bathroom.

Lighting:

  • Bright, Even Lighting: Ensure the bathroom is well-lit with bright, even lighting to enhance visibility. Consider motion-activated lighting for ease of use.

  • Natural Light: Where possible, incorporate natural light through windows or skylights to create a welcoming environment.
